What Moves Us

Picking Up Slack

I've been thinking some things through and struggling to get a start on some goals I set. But then an idea popped into my head, and it was a game changer. I realized that just knowing I needed to do something to get from point A to point B wasn't enough. I kept resisting and procrastinating. So I found something that would really bring me joy and excitement and set it as point C. I linked my original goal to an outcome that was such a powerful and positive motivator, I no longer thought working toward point B was a pain. I know there have been studies done on the subject of using your strengths and motivators to generate happiness and life satisfaction, as well as success. But sometimes it can be hard to translate that into real life strategy! I'm pretty excited to have learned a little more. :) So these are my thoughts:

If you're having trouble with a goal, you might be missing sufficient motivation. Sometimes just getting by or knowing it's a good thing to do aren't enough. Your reason for working must be something you feel, emotionally. It should fill you with energy, anticipation, and willingness. If you can't find what you're truly passionate about within the goal, make sure it's still the right goal for you. If it is, add something else to the mix, find a different angle, or plan for something the goal will allow you to do. Think outside the box--include things you didn't think you could have in your life. When your reason means enough to you, you'll learn how to succeed one day at a time.

Mindful May

5/29/15

We can’t focus on our weaknesses and evoke strength. Nor can we dwell on our troubles and hope to feel better. A constructive approach generates positive energy, opens our eyes to opportunities, and empowers us to take action. And we don't have to ignore reality to be positive: A constructive realist can address challenges without identifying him or herself with negative emotions.

Try being aware of every negative thought or belief you have today. Your problems might be real, but reinforcing and empowering them in your mind won't help you. When you are aware of your thoughts and beliefs, you can identify destructive patterns and begin building new habits and beliefs that will support your happiness and success! Leave a comment if you have thoughts or want to discuss the subject more! :)

I've realized a few things lately. There are no opportunities in the past. And there are undetermined, inaccessible possibilities ahead. So when we look for happiness in either direction, we stay locked in a game we can't win. But when we embrace the present moment, we awake to the joys and opportunities truly available for us. In the present, we are free. In the present, we find peace.

You are worthy to receive all the beauty and abundance around you. Don't push it away for another day. Look for it, believe it, and feel grateful for it. :)

Yes, Florida is humid, but it gave me this a couple days ago!
Sometimes the most simple things are the most beautiful,
and we remember that it is wonderful to be alive. :)

Zippy ALWAYS lives in the present, and he's always happy--
able to receive every joy of living. Way to go, Zippy! lol

Flexible thinking gets us around obstacles and helps us to see opportunities. There is never just one way to reach our dreams. A missed opportunity could keep you stuck, wondering why you can't move forward. Be open to people and opportunities that resonate with your passion, and don't be afraid to walk through new doors!

I don't have time to do more than post a picture of the cute teacup I got today, but I do have to say that my jasmine vanilla tea tasted even better than usual, and seeing those words every time I took a sip was a cue to ground myself in the present moment. What a delightful treat! It's the little things, right?! ;) What helps you open your heart to the present moment?

Perspective

4/11/2015

Sometimes it seems as if one thing will compromise everything. How silly. We might as well say that one star defines the entire cosmos. We mistakenly think that our circumstances are vast and our beings fleeting, when in truth, our beings are vast and our circumstances fleeting. Coming home to this vastness within opens the path ahead.

Only when we become too attached to our troubles do they have the power to define us. We are filled with the power to define them and ourselves. That's why it's so important to learn how to fill and draw from our inner reservoir so that we have the emotional, spiritual, and physical energy to exercise that power and fulfill our capacity for happiness. Meditation is one of the main things that has taught me how to do this deeply and reliably: I love it! What has helped you?

When we experience joy, love, or beauty, we mistakenly think that our feelings reside in and depend on the person or object of our affection. But what we experience in response to external things is a manifestation of our capacity for those very qualities within ourselves. Our capacity to love, perceive beauty, and experience happiness transcends objects and people; And so it is that when we lose a loved or beautiful thing, we do not lose our ability to love or experience beauty. If we learn the proper mental practice, we know we can cultivate happiness at any time, and we have much more to give to our experiences and our loved ones.

Spring and Renewal

Because it's Spring, I thought a little message about renewal was in order! More on this great subject later. :)

We must stop looking outside ourselves: we'll never find enough to compensate for what we don't cherish within. Peace and fulfillment begin when we create in ourselves a place to which we want to come home. After that, we can grow many things. When beauty and compassion blossom from the inside, the world looks like heaven.

A Beautiful Place to Be

Sunset in Sarasota Florida. A view I get to see often. :)

After years of writing (and a lifetime of pondering!), I finally decided to make a home for it all. I'm of course doing this at 5 am, so the first post will be short. But what better way to start than with the reminder that perspective is everything. Often we can see only what is right in front of us, and sometimes it looks bleak. Sometimes it's looked so bleak for so long we feel we have nothing left to give. But there is always a path that got us to that point, and there is always a path back. The problem is that we either can't believe it or we can't see how it will happen.

I'm quite logical and have long been plagued by the needs to know how things work and to reason things out on my own. But one thing I've learned recently is that if we demand to know how something can work out before believing it can work out, it usually won't happen. Our doubt and hesitance become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I've also learned that if we put ourselves in the right state of mind or being--if we are living true to ourselves, operating with self-compassion and mindfulness, and giving mental energy to the positive things that fulfill us--we attract more of the same. The universe will then give us what we pursue in the most efficient and expedient way.

Our dreams materialize in ways that, when we try to work it all out in our heads, we can never anticipate. Which means that if we want to move forward, we must focus our energies on creating the atmosphere and energy we want today, knowing that those efforts will attract like people and opportunities. Instead of being paralyzed while we worry or ruminate or analyze, we open up the doors to life, and that is the only way things will begin to change for us.

There is always light just waiting to be found. It is something I consistently lose sight of when I'm faced with challenges I can't seem to overcome. But each time we make that journey, we learn how to better find and access the light, even when circumstances first appear dark. Usually, it won't look the way we thought it would, and it won't be where we thought it would be, but it is there. And the first step to finding it is coming back to ourselves with compassion, thus cultivating peace and mindfulness within ourselves. Compassion generates freedom, energy, and renewal, and we need those things--especially when the road is trying and we feel spent. Once our inner well begins to fill, we find that instead of exhausting our energies dealing with the problems in life, we now pour energy into things that continue filling our well--and enrich those around us, too!

I believe there is a law of faith or energy or maybe in some sense quantum physics that we humans, with all our intellect and analysis, often bungle. When we direct energy toward something, it will respond and resonate. That is, if we focus on our problems, ruminate over our past, or worry over how we'll accomplish something, we are living in an energy state that attracts the very things we're trying to prevent. And we keep feeding them! We will be so preoccupied with that focus that we will not have the same interactions we would have had, we will not generate the same opportunities, we will not think as creatively. But if we live mindfully, appreciating the present moment and cultivating the kind of thoughts and energy that align with abundance and fulfillment, not only will we encounter the world differently, but it will respond. What a beautiful, empowering principle! We truly are creators in our own lives. :)

So what's the most beautiful place to be? The present moment. We can always be in the most beautiful place, no matter where we are physically. Here's a great talk on mindfulness and the obstacles we face:

PS. That was long. Every time I start off with "this is going to be short," it always ends up this way. -_-
